The Council of Europe on the trade in human organs

Strasbourg /24 June 2008/ - The PACE Human Rights and Legal Affairs Commettee at the session held at the end of June discussed the trade in human organs in Kosovo.

Representatives of the Serbian delegation said that it was the „most important item“ for Serbia and supposed that victims of the organ trade were Serbs missing from the territory of Kosovo and Metohija.

The information, mostly, came from the book by former Hague Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte, in which she claimed that potential victims of the trade organ had been taken from Kosovo and Metohija into Albania.

The Russian delegation at the spring session asked the Council of Europe to look into the inhumane treatment of people and the illegal trade in human organs in Kosovo.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Coucil of Europe (PACE) President
Luis Maria de Puig said that the issue might be discussed during this week’s session, but repeated that the allegations from Del Ponte’s book were not “sufficiently substantiated.”
